Sex Coaching v Sex Therapy
Sex coaching is a form of personal coaching that focuses specifically on sexual wellbeing and intimacy. Sex coaches work with individuals or couples to help them improve their sexual experiences, overcome challenges, and enhance their overall sexual satisfaction. The goal of sex coaching is to provide support, guidance, and education to clients to create a more fulfilling and joyous sexual life.
Sex coaching is distinct from sex therapy, as it is typically more future-oriented and focuses on personal development and empowerment rather than addressing deep-rooted emotional or psychological issues. While sex therapists are licensed mental health professionals who can diagnose and treat psychological, sexual problems, sex coaches are not therapists and do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions.
It’s important to note that sex coaching, like all coaching services, is typically not covered by health insurance because it does not involve diagnosing or treating mental health disorders.

Sex therapy is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on addressing and treating sexual concerns, difficulties, and dysfunctions. It is provided by licensed mental health professionals who have received specialized training in the field of sex therapy. Sex therapists are typically psychologists, licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed counselors, or social workers with expertise in sexual health and intimacy.
The primary goal of sex therapy is to help individuals and couples overcome sexual challenges and improve their sexual wellbeing. Sex therapists use evidence-based therapeutic techniques to address a wide range of sexual issues

Therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, primarily addresses emotional and psychological issues. It delves into past experiences, traumas, and deep-seated emotions to promote healing and personal growth.
Scope
Therapists are trained to diagnose & treat mental health disorders, emotional distress, and behavioral problems using therapeutic techniques to explore, understand, & resolve underlying issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship problems, and other psychological challenges.
Role of the Therapist & Time
Therapists may delve into the client's past, emotions, and thought patterns to help them gain insight into their struggles and work towards healing and transformation. Therapy is often more extended and may continue for several weeks, months, or even years, depending on the complexity of the issues and the client's progress.
At HSH, our coaches are mostly licensed therapists or in the process of licensure and have extensive experience working with individuals and all types of partnerships in mental health and sex therapy.
However, when working with coaching clients at HSH, they will not be using their licenses to diagnose or a mental health treatment plan. If therapy is indicated during the coaching time frame, they may refer clients to a therapist in the client’s residential location.
Integration of Coaching and Therapy
In some cases, individuals may find it beneficial to combine coaching and therapy for a comprehensive approach to sexual wellbeing. For example, coaching can provide practical strategies and goal-setting, while therapy addresses underlying emotional issues or trauma that may require more in-depth exploration and healing.
Ultimately, the choice between coaching and therapy for sexual wellbeing depends on the specific challenges you are facing, your goals, and the level of support and guidance you need. If you’re uncertain, consulting with a qualified sexual health professional can help you determine which approach may be more suitable for your unique situation.
